The maternal and child mortality rates of Peru are comparatively
high among Latin American nations. This program attempts
to promote capacity building of mothers who reside in
the district of Carabayllo, Lima, where impoverishment
is an acute problem. In this program health promoters
are trained and expected to provide informal education
to the local mothers on health and nutrition. Such promoters
play key roles in empowerment of mothers and self-help
actions among them. It is expected that community education
to exchange knowledge and practices also helps to build
mothers' network in the vicinity.
