Promotion of Community-managed Health |
 |
This program provides assistance to the remote communities
of hilly region in El Paraiso bordering to Nicaragua in
two ways. The first approach is to help train health volunteers
who will thereafter open and manage community drug posts
to offer medicines at affordable prices.
The project supports their collective procurement. A management
committee consisting of representatives of the health
volunteers from each drug post has been formed to promote
self-reliance and mutual assistance.
The second approach is to help train traditional birth
attendants (TBA) who promote pre-natal and post-natal
check-ups and safe delivery for expectant mothers. In
addition, the training of health center personnel and
support of the monthly meetings among the health center
staff, TBAs, and health volunteers are meant to strengthen
the referral system between health centers and communities.

Prevention of HIV/AIDS among Youth |
 |
Honduras holds about 60% of all the HIV population in
Central America. Half of them are young and sexually active,
and, thus, health education in and out of school is important
to prevent infection among youth. In Tegucigalpa, the
capital of Honduras, workshops are conducted for youth
development (including HIV/AIDS preventive education)
for elementary and secondary school students.
Currently, the youth leaders educated and trained in the
project are working as peer educators to disseminate knowledge
on sexuality and HIV/AIDS, and promote behavior change.
For awareness-raising on HIV/AIDS, campaigns are organized
on such occasions as World AIDS Day and National Week
for Youth.
